GrillGun and Su-VGun Component Breakdown: Understanding Your Propane Torch

GrillGrun Breakdown: Controls and Components

For this visual breakdown, we will be showing a GrillGun. If you have a Su-VGun, they are very similar and any difference will be noted for your consideration within the component breakdowns in the article.

The Fire Bell (A):

The Fire Bell (A) is an important component of Grillblazer torches. It's role is to help properly contain the small spark and low gas flow that helps ignite your torch when you pull the Trigger (E), and properly regulate how much oxygen your flame receives while it burns the fuel and air mixture sent down the Barrel (C). On Su-VGuns, the Fire Bell (A) contains a faceplate, or a reducer. This piece of metal helps the Su-VGun have better control of the flame with lower gas flow, making sure that all the fuel it receives is burned cleanly in a nice blue flame. A Su-VGun will not work properly without the Fire Bell Reducer.

Spark Electrode (B):

The Spark Electrode (B) is a ceramic insulated wire that passes through the rear of the Fire Bell (A) to provide the electric arc that ignites your torch when you pull the Trigger (E). The Electrode is connected to the PE sparker inside the torch by the external igniter wire that travels through the diverter rod tube below the Fuel Barrel (C). This wire only works if it's insulated from the metal components of the torch until it terminates inside the Fire Bell (A)... If your external igniter wire is damaged, burnt, or disconnected from the Spark Electrode (B), your torch will not light when you pull the Trigger (E)Relevant Article

Fuel Barrel (C):

The Fuel Barrel (C) is a deceptively simple component of a GrillGun or Su-VGun. Its first job is to mix the gaseous fuel that is emitted from the brass nozzle within the Barrel with the air around your torch through the holes located in front of the red Gas Valve (D). These hole are very important in making a perfect propane torch like the GrillGun or Su-VGun. In order for your propane to burn with the hot, bright blue flame that our torches provide, Bob Healey had to perfectly size these holes and shape the Barrel to properly mix the fuel and air into the perfect mixture, which is then sent down the Fuel Barrel to be burned within the Fire Bell (A). Any obstruction to these air holes will compromise the operation of your torch.

Gas Valve (D):

This red knob is the primary control surface of your Grillblazer torch. The Gas Valve (D) operates in a precise manner, allowing a specific, adjustable amounts of fuel to enter the Fuel Barrel (C). With this valve, you can exactly control how large a flame you would like to apply with your torch. Simply twist the red knob counter-clockwise to open up the torch, and clockwise to close the valve. REMEMBER: To ignite your torch, you must use only a trickle of gas, approximately an 1/8"th to 1/16"th of a turn. Once you ignite your torch, you can increase or decrease your flame output as you wish.

Finger Trigger (E):

The Finger Trigger (E), or Trigger, is used solely to start the initial ignition of your GrillGun or Su-VGun. It completes two actions:
  1. It engages a piezoelectric sparker within the body of the gun that generates a small spark of electricity. That electricity travels to the Fire Bell (A) where it arcs behind the diverter rod, and ignites your torch.
  2. Secondly, the trigger actuates a diverter rod within the Fire Bell (A), which looks like a small, hooked "spoon". This "spoon" diverts the gas away from the open end of the Fire Bell where it normally goes, and makes it swirl around inside the Fire Bell. This makes it easier for the small electric spark to ignite the gas exiting the Barrel.
IMPORTANT: Once your torch is lit, release the Finger Trigger (E) to allow the gas to flow normally out of the front of your Torch. This Trigger is only used to Ignite the torch, and should not be held down during it's use.

Handle Trigger (F) [Bypass Valve]:

The Handle Trigger (F) is more commonly know as the "Bypass Valve". This valve is one of the coolest features of the Grillblazer torches: It opens the torch up to full blast with a single squeeze! The first step is to ignite your torch with a trickle of gas (see component D), keeping a small flame burning at the end of your torch. Then, with the gun pointed in a safe direction, unlock the Bypass Valve by pressing down on the Handle Trigger Lock (G) with your pinkie finger, then squeeze the handle! The rush you feel as you blast your way to fire will only be comparable to the rush of Propane you just released...

Handle Trigger Lock (G) [Pinkie Lock]:

This feature is meant to prevent the Handle Trigger (F) from being activated unintentionally, as can easily happen with handle triggers of all kinds. It's often known within Grillblazer as the "Pinkie Lock". Simply keep the metal tab pressed against the bottom of the handle, towards the Gas Connector (H), and your Bypass Valve is ready to use!

Gas Connector (H):

The Gas Connector (H) is the point at which you connect your fuel source to your GrillGun or Su-VGun. It is a male CGA600 gas connector, and it can either connect directly to 1lb Propane Bottles (I) like the Coleman tank pictured above, or attach with our Grillblazer hoses to larger 20lb propane tanks with female POL fittings. If you are in a foreign country, or have propane tanks that use connectors outside of either common CGA600 or Prest-O-Lite connectors, check this article on our Help Desk titled Our Gas Connector Specs (USA and Abroad) to see what adapters you may need!

Make sure that when connecting fuel sources to your torch, whether it be a tank or a hose fitting, that you do not overtighten your Gas Connector (H), or you may damage your Gas Connector gasket.

1lb Propane Bottle (I):

For display only: Grillblazer is unable to ship propane or propane cylinders. Propane is sold separately at your local hardware store or Walmart.
